Leo van der Kleij

Photographer/visual artist since 1983, studied photography at the Fotovakschool (graduated 1982)
He works as a documentary photographer, mainly interested in art, architecture, industrial area's and people. Also he often collaborates with artists and photographers in various projects in Europe and Japan since 1986, e.g at the Dokumenta Kassel in 1987 and 1992.
His photoworks were shown a.o. in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Japan since 1983, in various galleries and museums. He also curated shows by other artists and has a lot of experience in making experimental exhibitions.

In his work he constantly switches between commission work and projects he initiates himself. At the moment (spring 2017) he works on two photobooks about Japan, by far his favorite country to work. He also prepares a big project about the former coalmine area's in Western Europe, to show the local people and their lives in the post industrial society. This project will take place from autumn 2017-autumn 2018.

As a teacher he worked with several photoclubs since 1986, and he was teacher at the art-center of the Technical University Delft from 1995-1998. He has done many lectures and masterclasses about photography and visual arts, and did photoworkshops with all sorts of people in different countries.
